In this Issue
This week, as Senator Ted Kennedy is remembered as a champion, not just for "the people," but specifically all people, we are thankful for those like Kennedy who fight for the rights of marginalized groups and reminded at the same time that our country and world still have a long way to go in terms of equality. A National Geographic program which aired Sunday asserted that all humans are essentially African, yet racial tension in our country is still very palpable, as evidenced by the controversy over Representative Jenkins' "great white hope" comment. And while women continue to gain rights worldwide, female voter turnout (or the lack thereof) in Afghanistan's recent election shows that hard won progress can still be trumped by fear, tradition, and apathy.
