In this Issue
Forty-five years after the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the struggle for true integration and equality remains a back-and-forth battle. Gay Latino Americans, who for many years have largely remained hidden due to what some view as extreme homophobia in the Latino community, are beginning to embrace their sexual identities and ‘come out’ in force. At the same time, an interracial couple has garnered a violent response from residents of their Brooklyn, NY, community. The white male in the relationship was violently beaten by a group of African- American males, and his father wants it labeled a hate crime. And as we continue fighting for women’s rights worldwide, Diane Sawyer becomes a beacon for all women as she assumes the high post of ABC anchor in December. Continue below for more Diversity in the News.

WOW! Fact
2.5 million grandparents were responsible for most of the basic needs (i.e., food, shelter, clothing) of one or more of the grandchildren who lived with them in 2007. These grandparents represented about 40 percent of all grandparents whose grandchildren lived with them. Of these caregivers, 1.6 million were grandmothers, and 932,000 were grandfathers.
