In this Issue
Race and racism have been hot topics in the news as of late, particularly as it relates to President Barack Obama. Former President Jimmy Carter reiterated Wednesday that he believes racism is an issue for President Obama in trying to lead the country. Yet, Obama has attempted to downplay the role of racism and asserts that while there are people who don't like him because he is African American, that's not the main reason his administration has drawn such fierce criticism. While the debate continues, today a woman will make military history. The Army will make Command Sgt. Maj. Teresa L. King its first female top drill sergeant. But Sergeant Major King’s ascension is also a reminder of the limits of gender integration in the military. Just 8 percent of the active-duty Army’s highest-ranking enlisted soldiers are female. And in NYC, Asian-American candidates won Democratic primaries in three City Council districts on Tuesday. These victors, all of whom are immigrants, reflect changes in New York City government over the past two decades. Continue below for more Diversity in the News.
