Interracial Couple Refused Marriage License – Diversity in the News – October 20, 2009

In this Issue

Although interracial marriage in the United States has been fully legal in all U.S. states since the 1967 Supreme Court decision that deemed anti-miscegenation laws unconstitutional, interracial couples continue to face opposition today. In Louisiana, a justice of the peace refused to issue a marriage license to an interracial couple saying his “main concern is for the children.” Gov. Bobby Jindal is calling for the justice’s dismissal. In other news, immigrant rights activists are calling on U.S. retailers to stop selling two controversial "Illegal Alien" costumes that have surfaced for Halloween, saying the outfits are an attack on illegal immigrants. Others, such as William Gheen, the president of Americans for Legal Immigration, call the reaction unfounded. "The only people getting upset are the hyper-sensitive, over-politically correct, pro-amnesty, illegal alien-supporting nuts," said Gheen. Continue below for more Diversity in the News.

WOW! Fact

The wages of the typical woman who had a job during the worst recession in decades rose faster than those of the typical man, new data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics show. Over the past two years, the wages of the median woman—at the statistical middle—rose 3.2% when adjusted for inflation. Wages of the median man rose 2%. Minority men were particularly hard hit, while minority women and highly educated women of all races did better. (Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics)
