One year after the historic 2008 presidential election, retired Gen. Colin Powell, the first African-American secretary of state, weighs in on the most pressing issues facing African-American men in the age of Obama. From embracing their significant role as fathers to mentoring youth who often lack positive adult models, Powell calls black men to action. African-American men confront many unique challenges, yet the challenges that minorities face are not unique to our country. In South Korea, a country where until recently people were taught to take pride in their nation’s “ethnic homogeneity”, racism and sexism are prevalent. However, the country is struggling to embrace a new reality. In just the past seven years, the number of foreign residents has doubled, even as the country’s population is expected to drop sharply in coming decades.
