Announcements and Opportunities

Women of Excellence Breakfast
On December 4th, NAFE will honor this year’s Women of Excellence at an Awards Breakfast from 8:00-10:30 AM in New York City. The event will be hosted by The Times Company at their Manhattan site, with sponsorship provided by IBM and Wellpoint.

We will honor our awardees and hear speakers Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, New York Times Pulitzer Prize winning correspondents and authors of Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide.

Kristof has also served as bureau chief in Hong Kong, Beijing, and Tokyo, and as associate managing editor. At the Times, WuDunn worked as a business editor and as a foreign correspondent in Tokyo and Beijing. Together, Kristof and WuDunn have written three books, including: China Wakes, Thunder from the East and Half the Sky.

5 Myths
…about Boomers and Technology
By Dr. Kathleen King

Dr. Kathleen (Kathy) P. King, MEd, EdD, CPC, is a keynote speaker, author, certified professional coach (faculty coach) and Fordham University professor. Kathy says, “Someone recently told me he believed every computer gadget should come accompanied by an 11 year old child. If you’re not a technology specialist, I bet you’re nodding your head in agreement.”

High-powered professionals crumble in tears, and mature adults run screaming down the office hall. It’s time to break down several critical myths about boomers learning technology.

1. Technology is only for kids; there is no way I can learn it. But Baby Boomers are dominating Facebook. This, and other, social media sites were wrestled from the keyboards of youngsters and are now a major domain for connecting with our old friends, and promoting business endeavors.

2. I don’t need technology for anything. If you want a professional reputation of being incapable of change and flexibility, continue ignoring technology. Solution: make the effort, seek training, and adopt new technology: these strategies can protect or change your image from has been to mover and shaker.

3. It’s way too technical.
Users don’t need to know technical lingo; you just point and click. As a starting point, remember your computer is really an electronic filing cabinet. You will gradually discover how to use technology more to streamline your effort and make your workspace efficient.

4. I just learn by myself: the “peck and poke” method.
Some adults believe they can learn technology on their own. Others don’t want to be clueless in a class of technophiles. You can quickly gain confidence and excel without public embarrassment with personal professional coach or trainer who specializes in helping adults learn technology. Everyone makes great strides with one-on-one support, and good coaches build your confidence in the learning process.

5. I’m too busy to learn.
Once you start learning technology, you’ll realize you save a lot of time. You can streamline and reorganize your work flow.

And with the time you save, you can address your continuing learning needs!
