Network News

Women in Networking (WIN), the local NAFE network in Indiana, recently held a Women’s History Program with over 100 people in attendance. Guest speaker was Angela Cain, Community Affairs Director, for WTHR TV News. A member of Indiana Senator Richard Lugar's staff read the 2010 Women's History Proclamation and presented it to WIN. And Mary Aurtrey, Network Co-Director, added this to the story: “The guys served us cake and punch.” See the special dessert in the photo.

5 Unusual Ways to Find a Job

by Paula Damiano, Editor – NAFE News & Notes and nafe.com

It’s official: The job market is looking up. The Conference Board's index of leading economic indictors, a gauge of future economic activity, jumped 1.4 percent in March 2010, the fastest growth in 10 months. Additionally, The U.S. Department of Labor reported that non-farm payroll employment increased by 162,000 in the same month.

If you’re still looking for a job, here are some unusual approaches to the hunt for employment from HR professionals and career coaches:

Go low-tech. Kevin Donlin of Guaranteed Resumes reminds job hunters that a fax can still capture a hiring manager’s attention. So can an unannounced in-person visit – if you have the nerve.

Wear your heart on your sleeve. Or your resume on your t-shirt – see photos of some creative job seekers here, courtesy of The Silicon Valley Blogger: http://www.thedigeratilife.com/blog/index.php

.

Add a signature line to your outgoing emails, Liz Ryan, international career expert on the new millennium workplace, suggests using your email signature to remind everyone you’re still seeking. Including your LinkedIn profile in the signature doubles the punch: http://jobs.denverpost.com/newsletter_articles/46.

Produce your own newsletter. Make yourself a quoted expert by publishing (print or electronic) a newsletter on your field of expertise and sending it to all the HR people with whom you’d like to interview. This advice comes from the The Guerilla Job Hunting site: http://guerrillajobhunting.

.

Think big. The Early Show on CBS reported the successful campaign of one job hunter, who rented an enormous billboard and posted his resume on it. It cost him $1,000 a month – but he got a job. http://www.cbsnews.

Good hunting!
